Mexico Section Prizes
Calls for
nominations
Authors,
journals and presses are invited to submit nominations for the 2015 LASA Mexico
Section Prizes, in the following categories: Humanities Book; Humanities Essay;
Social Sciences Book; Social Sciences Essay; Dissertation. All nominees must
meet the eligibility criteria established by each prize. A nomination letter,
addressed and e-mailed to the relevant committee chair, following the criteria
below must accompany all nominations. Books, essays and dissertations must be
sent to each of the committee members, in the manner required by each award. We
ask members, presses, journals and friends to distribute widely and to
encourage anybody eligible to apply.
For all prizess,
letters of nomination must include:
1. The
author’s name, current academic affiliation, e-mail and postal address.
2. Statement
confirming the author’s membership in LASA and LASA Mexico for 2015. If 2015
membership is purchased after January 1, please attach receipt
3. Full
editorial information of the book or article or, for dissertations, title, university
where the degree was obtained, date of defense and date of degree.
4. Contact
information for a representative of the press or of the journal, or of the director
of the dissertation (to inform them of the award).
5. Any
clarification regarding eligibility as required by each prize.2015 LASA Mexico
Humanities Book Prize
Call for
Nominations
The 2015
LASA Mexico Humanities Book Prize awards an outstanding and original contribution
to the study of Mexico in book-length academic monographs and works published
in 2014, written by members of the Mexico Section of the Latin American Studies
Association, in disciplines identified with the humanities. The prize consists
in US$500.00 (Five Hundred Dollars, U.S.) and a diploma. Prizes will be
formally announced during the LASA Mexico Section Business Meeting in the
Annual Conference, which will take place in San Juan, P.R. in late May. Authors
of entries will be informed of the outcome no earlier than April 1st, 2015 and
no later than April 15th. The prize is indivisible, and the committee may only
grant the prize to one winner, although it can grant honorable mentions at its
discretion. The committee’s decision, once announced to authors, is final and
may not be appealed.
Authors and
books must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Books must
be scholarly monographs or works with substantial academic research. They may
not have more than 3 co-authors. Anthologies, Edited collections, books with
more than three authors, works of creative writing (such as fiction or poetry),
critical editions and works in non-book format are not eligible. Books must be
written in English or Spanish, or provide a translation to English or Spanish
if written in other language.
• Humanities
disciplines include (but are not limited to): literary studies, film studies,
visual culture studies, media studies, cultural studies, music, art history,
philosophy, critical theory, post-humanities fields (such as disability
studies, animal studies and cyborg studies) and other disciplines centered in
textual and/or cultural analysis. Historians and members of other disciplines
bordering with the social sciences may choose in which award to compete, but
may not compete in both book awards.
• Books must
have a publication date of 2014 and they must be first editions. Books with a
publication date of 2013, but published in 2014 may participate with proof of
date of actual publication (such as Amazon date, or certification by the
publisher) attached to the letter of nomination. Books with a publication date
of 2015 must wait for the 2016 competition even if actually published in 2014.
Translations of books published prior to 2014, reprints, expanded editions,
re-editions or any new version of a book prior to 2014 are not elegible. Books
that compile scholarly essays of a single author are eligible as long as the
contents were not published in book form prior to 2014.
• Authors
must be members of the Latin American Studies Association and the Mexico
Section for 2015, and they must become members no later than February 1, 2015.
• If the book has a physical edition (hardcover or paperback), a physical copy
must be mailed to each one of the committee members to their respective
addresses below. Electronic submissions are not acceptable for books available
in physical form. If a book was published solely in electronic edition, it is
eligible, but the committee chair must be notified prior to submission and a
verification of this must accompany the nomination.
• All
submissions must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2015. In cases of
books lost in the mail or any other reason that may cause a small delay, the
committee chair may provide latitude at his discretion.
• There are
no exceptions to any of the eligibility rules. Any questions not covered by
these rules will be resolved at the sole discretion of the committee chair.

to the study of Mexico in a dissertation at the doctoral level, written by members
of the Mexico Section of the Latin American Studies Association, in any discipline.
The prize consists in US$500.00 (Five-Hundred Dollars, U.S.) and a diploma. Prizes
will be formally announced during the LASA Mexico Section Business Meeting in the
Annual Conference, which will take place in San Juan, P.R. in late May. Authors
of entries will be informed of the outcome no earlier than April 1st, 2015 and
no later than April 15th. The prize is indivisible, and the committee may only
grant the prize to one winner, although it can grant honorable mentions at its

Dissertations must have been written for the purposes of completing a degree at
the Ph.D., doctorado or the highest degree of the relevant discipline at an
institution of higher education. The dissertation must result in a degree
granted in any term of the year 2014. Dissertations defended in
2014, but
with degrees granted in 2015 must wait for the 2065 competition. Dissertations
defended in 2013, but with degrees granted in 2014 may compete, provided that
they did not compete in the 2014 LASA Mexico Dissertation Prize. Defense and
degree dates must be clearly stated in the nomination letter.
• Authors
must be members of the Latin American Studies Association and the Mexico
Section for 2015, and they must become members no later than February 1, 2015.
• All
submissions must be made electronically, in PDF format, with no password. The
PDF must correspond to the final version as submitted to ProQuest or any
relevant institutional repository for dissertations.
